The Roost is a very remote area of south eastern Utah. Canyoneering adventures in Robbers Roost tend to be fairly dry, and have long exits. The area was used in the late 1800's and early 1900's by outlaws, hence the name. They have left the area with a rich and colorful history and many legends.
Season To Visit
Anytime, although summers are too hot for my taste. Because Roost canyons tend to not hold a ton of water, they can be pleasant even in the dead of winter.
How To Get There
Most head into the roost by heading south of Green River, or east from highway 95, between I-70 and Hanksville. The roost is a large area, take extra supplies and maps. Good camping is surprisingly limited. Granary spring is the defacto standard for large groups. For smaller groups, many small niches can provide nice accommodations.
Robbers Roost Classics
Canyoneering has become one of the main draws to Robbers Roost. The area has many good canyons from easy to intermediate, and even a few more advanced ones. Good recommendations for a first time visitor would be
Blue John or
Larry Canyon. If your up for more challenge, there are some narrower canyons that require a bit of climbing. These include
Alcatraz and
Chambers. Be warned, Chambers in particular, requires advanced skills.
Warning! The roost is a long ways from pavement, and not the place to be if it's going to rain. Roads can become difficult or impassable with rain! This also applies to exits up steep slickrock out of canyons.
