(2 Ratings)
RATING: 3B
LENGTH: III (5-7 hours for the standard route)
GEAR: Standard Technical Gear, 20 m ( 66 ft. ) of webbing if doing the full Larry
RAPPELS: 2-5 to 30 m ( 99 ft. ) (several are optional) (add 1-3 more if doing the lower section)
WATER: Generally some wading, wetsuit recommended in cooler/cold temperatures, but often done without.
FLASHFLOOD: Moderate to High
SEASON: Spring, Summer, Fall
NOTES: A car shuttle is very useful, and makes this a casual day. Without a car shuttle, add 2 or so hours. The shuttle road generally requires a high clearance vehicle. The trailhead is generally accessible to most vehicles, although the last mile can have a rough spot or two.
Hype
Larry Canyon is one of the Robbers Roost classics. With a car shuttle, this is a casual romp with a short approach, and fairly short exit. The goods in the canyon are second to none, with nice rappels, and deep dark narrows. A section of unique "slanted slot" is one of the signature features of this canyon. This is a recommended adventure to most canyoneers. It is beginner friendly territory, with competent leadership.Wetsuits can generally be left behind, except in very cool and cold temperatures. Except after recent rains, the canyon is generally fairly dry with just a few short sections of wading. The canyon, as a classic, also generally sees a fair bit of use. Don't expect to have the canyon to yourself on weekends. Of the 4 trips I have done, only one did we not see other people in the canyon. (And that was many years ago before it became popular.)
Although most do "the standard Larry", those with ambition, that like a longer day, can also do the full Larry. This addition adds 3-5 hours (assuming a car shuttle), and visits the lower section of the canyon. Although not narrow, or a slot, the lower section offers easy hiking and some nice views. It is included in this description, but only recommended for those that want a long day. The exit requires moderate route finding.
