Rock art at Grassy Trail

Perched above the Price River, Grassy Trail is the site of both Native American visitation, as well as early railroad efforts. The panels at Grassy Trail are a mix of "gringo graffiti" as well as older rock art, and quite extensive. The site is fascinating.

Grassy Trail was a narrow-gauge railroad that was built in 1882 to connect Grand Junction Colorado to Helper Utah as part of a more significant Desert Mainline effort. After only a few years of use, the track was upgraded and re-routed to a more direct path from Woodside to Price. The new line left the Grassy Trail abandoned. Not much remains in the area besides gringo graffiti and old railroad grade. For more history on the railroad, see the DRGW site ( http://www.drgw.net/info/UtahDesert ).

Note: Reaching the trailhead requires high clearance, and better, a 4x4. The road is not passable when wet, and has one boulder in it that requires careful driving and a relatively narrow vehicle. The road would be a good mountain bike outing for those so inclined. A Grand Cherokee made it without any difficulty. Smaller SUV type vehicles are likely to be able to get within a mile or so of the panel if carefully driven.
