The middle falls of the Upper Provo River Falls

The middle falls of the Upper Provo River Falls

One of the more popular roadside attractions along the Mirror Lake Highway is the Provo River Falls. The river drops here, in quick succession over three waterfalls and several cascades. This photogenic spot is a great place to stop, have a picnic, and take in the sights.

Historical Note: The Provo River is named after the early trapper Etienne Provost (1785 – 3 July 1850). The city of Provo is named for the same. He may have been the first European to see the Great Salt Lake, visiting it in 1824 or 25.

Getting There

Note: The Mirror Lake highway that is used to access this hike is paved and accessible to all vehicles, except when it is closed in the winter. The gate is typically open from Memorial Day until late October, but if planning this hike on the shoulder season, call the forest service to see if it is open. ((801) 466-6411)

From Kamas, head east on UT-150 (Mirror Lake Highway) for about 24 miles to mile post 23.9. The trailhead is well signed on the left (west) side of the highway and is a large parking area with a pit toilet.

Route

From the parking area, a trail meanders down to falls visible from the parking area, then continues downstream visiting two other falls and several cascades. Stunning!
