Hype

This is a canyon that surprised me. Given its short length, I wasn't expecting a lot, but was pleasantly surprised.

The narrow section is deep, dark, and a lot of fun, while the exit hike offers some of the best views into Robbers Roost area of any around. Coupled with the fact it only takes a couple of hours makes this a good beginner canyon, or one to do in the winter. After very heavy rains, we were pleasantly surprised to find the canyon with only a few small pools that were easy to avoid.

Comments

Though not described here, you can add one more rap by continuing down the flat streambed after the canyon opens to the final drop down to the bench a little above the creek. It's anchored by a deadman/cairn and is a dramatic, open air descent. No need to pull your rope once down - the exit route back up takes you almost back to the start of this last rap. Save the rock from grooves. On the first rap, the warning "be mindful of rope pull," is to be heeded. Thinking we'd save rope bulk & weight, we used a 120 ft. with a biner block & pull cord. On the pull, the biner caught temporarily on a small, sharp ledge even though I watched rope placement carefully as I descended. A continuous, doubled rope would eliminate such possibilities. The 2nd rap is two-staged. Be sure and continue past the small shelf thats' about 3/5ths of the distance down. Overall, a shorter slot that has a lot of bang for the buck.
