Beauty, whether moral or natural, is felt, more properly than perceived.
-David Hume

Hume's quote comes to mind when describing Death Hollow. The canyon is long, over 20 miles, and requires skills, fitness, and time to descend. The reward, however, is a beautiful and powerful canyon. Death Hollow is a classic Escalante area backpack that leaves an impression on the hiker and feels like an accomplishment. It traverses the full length of Death Hollow, from the top of the drainage to its confluence with the Escalante River. Although a classic, it is just difficult enough and long enough to not see crowds, at least in its upper reaches.

Be warned, however, this is a very physical adventure that is best left to seasoned backpackers and Colorado Plateau aficionados. Have a few seasons under your belt before committing to Death Hollow. The trip, in addition to miles, generally requires a fair bit of swimming and down climbs in the upper section. Those with canyoneering experience should find the obstacles and downclimbs straightforward.

Warning: Death Hollow contains an abundance of Poison Ivy! Some of it can be avoided by staying directly in the water course, but many of the side trails cross through patches. Long pants and sleeves are a must, as is a sharp eye.
