The Walnut Knob Panel is a well preserved and interesting panel above the rim of Arch Canyon, south west of Blanding. To see the panel requires a short, moderately steep hike, but it is short enough to be well suited to families and most everyone. Be sure to admire the views of Comb Ridge from the panel.
Trailhead
Begin at mile post 107 on highway 95. This is 107 miles south east of Hanksville, or about 18 miles south west of Blanding. To reach the area from Blanding, travel south out of Blanding about 3.5 miles to the junction with highway 95. Go right onto 95 about 14 miles to mile post 107.
Turn off highway 95 north onto San Juan County road #205. Follow this well graded road 2.3 miles, and take a left before Comb Wash into Arch Canyon. Note, this road crosses Tribal Lands, posted no trespassing. Please be respectful and do not park, camp, or hike on the tribal lands.
As you turn off at 2.3 miles, you quickly re-enter BLM land. There is a large parking area here, near a cottonwood. There are also several camping spots. This is the trailhead.
Route
From the trailhead, spot the obvious outcropping on the slopes above. Hike up a bit north of the outcropping to avoid the private tribal lands. Once near the level of the outcropping, contour left (south) to it. The panel is on the north side.
