Heading into Mellor Canyon

Heading into Mellor Canyon

Utah never ceases to me amaze me with all the off-the-beaten canyons, valleys and peaks that are infrequently visited. Mellor Canyon, close to Yuba Lake, is a side canyon coming into the Sevier River Valley. This is one of those places I had never heard of but happened to pass by and decide to check out.

The upper parts of the canyon have conglomerate rock similar to Maple Canyon near Ephraim, but not nearly as vertical or imposing. The lower part of the canyon has a petroglyph panel. Though not nearly as dramatic as many panels in Utah, that this one is in the northern part of the state made it very interesting to me, and quite different from the rock art at the nearby Yuba Lake State Park. This panel appears to me to be much older and of a different style.

On our visit, the road was easily passable by all vehicles, though probably difficult if muddy. This is not a place I would make a special trip to visit, but make a great side trip if passing through the area. There were not any good dispersed camping sites in the section we visited. If looking for camping in the area, I would recommend Yuba Lake State Park.
