Hype:

The upper black box is my favorite canyoneering adventure in the northern swell. A very short approach and exit, coupled with an amazing stretch of canyon make this one that keeps me coming back. A big thanks to jddiener for pointing out the preferred out, it makes a good canyon even better!

My History:

I've been through the Upper Black Box several times, most recently in the summer of 2007. Although I have usually done it in the fall, summer was likely my best trip through. Midday, the lighting was excellent.

First did the better route in 91. We called it curious George but it had been done many times before evidenced by the webbing on the last/only rappel. Love the tip toe with a perfect undercling traverse around the possible kph. A german shepherd once made it to the last rap with only partner assists.
Thanks for the tip!

Thanks for the tip on the other entry. Finally checked it out last fall, it is a great way to do the upper black box! I updated this description to include it.

Thanks for putting up the shortcut route, as we were able to combine it with an ascent of Mexican Mtn for a great medium length day. I have to admit however that I left your beta/map sitting in my printer, so just had my unmarked map... and I thought you had indicated the little side canyon just upstream of your actual entry. It actually was a fun little canyon with a couple of enjoyable downclimbs & short slot followed by an 80 foot rappel from a chokestone to the bottom. By that point (top of rappel) I knew we were on a different route, but it went so we continued. A recommended option, although next time I'll have to try your real route. Thanks.
