Woody Canyon - Trachyte Area
Overview:
Rating: 4A III
Length: 4-6 Hours
Gear: 30 m ( 99 ft ) Rope. Wetsuit needed. Keeper pothole gear required. Ibis
hook required. Group of 3 minimum.
Water: Much exposure to cold water in the potholes.
Flash flood Danger: Moderate, but you can see the whole drainage and
skies on the approach.
Season: Spring, Summer, Fall.
Hype:
Woody, although short in length, packs a powerful punch
when it comes to potholes challenges. The canyon can be done with as
few as one rappel, but a rope is needed for the challenge of getting
into, and out of the many potholes.
My History:
I've been through Woody twice, most recently in
the summer of 2008. At that time, the water level was covering the
natural bridge in the penultimate potholes, and we couldn't even see
it.
