canyon Upper Stair Canyon - North Wash
( 0 Votes )
RATING: 3A
LENGTH: 2-4 Hours
GEAR: A short rope may be handy for beginners
WATER: Generally little or none, most pools should be avoidable.
FLASH FLOOD DANGER: Moderate, but you can see the whole drainage and skies on the approach.
SEASON: Any.

Hype:

Upper Stair is a great, short outing. Although not technical, it does involve a lot of chimneying and stemming, so is only recommended for technical canyoneers. Being a short route, with no rappels, allows this canyon to be enjoyed while carrying minimal gear.

My History:

I have been through Upper Stair several times, most recently in the winter of 2007. The first time we went all the way down to Highway 95. The upper section is definitely the best section of the canyon.

Thanks for your beta on Stair, which we used a few weeks ago. That is one fun canyon with great skinnies and plenty of fun chimneying and shimmying. We added Horseplay for an A+ day in the canyons. First time in each canyon for all three of us. But I'm definitely going to do that trip again.

We took along a 40' rope which was useful for both canyons for handlines on some of the more challenging climbs.

Thanks for the info and the map! Keep up the great work.
