South Fork of Maidenwater - Trachyte
Overview:
Rating: 3B II
Length: 3-5 Hours
Gear: Standard Technical Gear, Wetsuit during cold weather,
Bring 20 M (60ft.) of webbing to replace anchors if needed.
Raps: 1-6+ (biggest rap 22M - 70ft.)
Hype:
The south fork of Maidenwater is a great canyon to practice
your natural anchor and/or down climbing skills. Although
highly skilled individuals can descend the canyon with 1 or 2
rappels, many groups require 8 or more to surmount the numerous
short drops.
My History:
I have been through a couple of times, both times during high
summer. I found the canyon completely dry except for one or two
ankle deep pools on both trips, but it is evident it normally
holds much more water than I found. Due to the large number of
potential rappels, the time needed for the canyon varies
immensely. My first trip through (solo) took a little over 2
hours, my second trip was with a partner and more leisurely,
taking around 4 hours.
