RATING: Class 4 hiking, VERY EXPOSED
LENGTH: 4-6 hours
GEAR: A short rope may be helpful
WATER: None, although there is a seep near Lewis Lodge
FLASH FLOOD DANGER: None
SEASON: Late Spring through Fall.
Hype:
Lewis Lodge is likely one of the best, if not the best Indian ruin on Cedar Mesa. It certainly wins hands down for position. First found in 1956 by Dick Lewis, the ruin contains a complex of 44 rooms and kivas. The position certainly makes the habitat very easy to defend. The ruins themselves date back the the thirteenth century, and are an amazing example of the architecture of the time.
WARNING: Visiting the ruins requires hiking on very exposed ledges. This hike is NOT RECOMMENDED for kids, dogs, or people afraid of heights. A stumble on the ledges could be fatal.
Note: The ruins have been vandalised over the years. If you are visiting, please do not touch, sit on, stand on, or otherwise disturb the ruins. Do not take any artifacts you may find from the site. Having existed for hundreds of years on their own, we need to carefully protect them so others can visit them in the future.
