canyon Gravel Canyon - Cedar Mesa
( 0 Votes )
RATING: 3B
LENGTH: 6-8 Hours
GEAR: Standard Technical Gear - Wetsuits in all but hottest conditions.
RAPPELS: 2 to 6 m ( 20 ft ) - 15 m ( 50 ft ) rope recommended.
WATER: Generally a fair amount of wading and swimming.
FLASH FLOOD DANGER: High
SEASON: Spring through Fall
NOTES: A high clearance vehicle is required to reach the trailhead in most conditions. The crossing of White Canyon, in the first few miles, is generally the most difficult.

Hype:

Gravel is one of the Cedar Mesa classics. The narrows are fantastic, with an impressive ruin near the end. Although a classic, your unlikely to see others in this area. Expect a long canyon with incredible scenary. There is good camping all along the approach road. All-in-all, when combined with Cheesebox, this is a great area to spend a few days.

My History:

I've been through Gravel twice over the years. On one trip, we encountered a huge amount of flotsam and very poor water quality.
