Typical Scene in the narrows

Typical Scene in the narrows

Lower Maidenwater offers some of the best non-technical narrows around. They are dark, well sculpted, and very photogenic. With easy access, and easy narrows, this is a very family friendly hike, suitable for dogs with a little help in a few spots.

The narrows have a small flowing stream that begins mid-way down canyon, and adds to the atmosphere. An interesting feature of Maidenwater is a large boulder wedged in 1/2 way down canyon. This boulder is interesting because it changes depending on floods. Many times the boulder will have a 1 m ( 4 ft. ) drop into a pool on its down stream side. This can be a challenge and force hikers to make a short swim and prevent hikers from hiking back up canyon. Other times the boulder is not even visible, and no pool or down climb exists. (Which is the current condition as of Fall 2010, you won't even notice the boulder). Either way, expect wading to thigh deep at the minimum.

The hike traditionally has been done as a loop down Maidenwater and up Trail canyon. Although this works, and is described as an alternative, Trail is not particularly interesting. The preferred route takes a circuitous loop up through slickrock dome country with outstanding views and scenery. (Class 4)
