Canyoning in Europe

To those accustomed to canyoneering on the Colorado Plateau, European canyons tend to be a whole different ball game. To the American traveler looking to get their feet wet with canyoning in Europe (pun intended), I would recommend Spain. For those unaccustomed to flowing canyons, hiring a guide for a few canyons is a good idea. In Spain, in particular, guides seem easy to find, relatively inexpensive, and provide fabulous days out.

Sardinia offers quite a few dry canyons, but tends to be a bit more difficult logistically.

Season

Most will want to visit in the Spring through Fall. Be warned, however, high season for tourism is August, with July also being very busy. If you can arrange to travel in Spring or September, you can generally get cheaper hotel rates, etc... Canyons in early spring can have too much flow, however.
